I got this question a lot: what kind of people do well at Amazon?
Here is my quick answer: analytical, comfortable with numbers, hard-working, have thick skins, might be a little bit socially awkward, have high tolerance for intense, stressful but stimulating environment, and rational.
I want to expand on the last attribute of being rational. If you tend to take things personally and emotionally you will be burned out very quickly. Amazon is not a collaborative team environment. It is very much in-your-face. It has a culture of escalating — if I don’t hear from you I will copy your manager. If I don’t hear from your manager I will copy your manager’s manager.
I got into a lot more details in the book How To Get A Job At Amazon.
